What are the benefits of carpet tiles over broadloom carpet, and how are they installed?

Carpet tiles are modular squares of carpet, usually 50 by 50 centimetres, laid individually rather than as one continuous roll of broadloom carpet. The main advantage in a commercial setting is access and repair: tiles can be lifted individually to reach cabling or raised access flooring underneath, and a single damaged or stained tile can be replaced without touching the rest of the floor. Installation typically uses a quarter-turn laying pattern, where each tile is rotated 90 degrees from its neighbour, which spreads pile direction and wear evenly and also hides minor colour variation between batches better than a uniform lay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a single damaged carpet tile be replaced without redoing the whole floor?
Yes, that’s one of the main advantages of tiles over broadloom carpet. A stained or damaged tile can usually be lifted and swapped in isolation, provided a matching spare is available.
Are carpet tiles suitable for floors with cabling underneath?
Yes, this is one of the most common reasons offices choose tiles. They can be lifted individually to access cabling or a raised access floor, then relaid without needing to cut or patch anything.
What is a quarter-turn lay, and why does it matter?

It’s a laying pattern where each tile is rotated 90 degrees from the one beside it. It spreads pile direction and any colour variation between batches evenly across the floor, rather than it showing as a pattern or a mismatched section.

Are carpet tiles as durable as broadloom carpet in a busy office?

Yes, commercial-grade carpet tiles are built for the same continuous foot traffic as broadloom carpet, and their modular nature actually makes long-term maintenance easier since individual tiles can be rotated or replaced as they wear.

How much does carpet tile installation cost?

It depends on the size of the space, the tile product chosen and whether there’s raised flooring or cabling to work around, so we measure and quote based on your space.
