What causes carpet to ripple, and how is restretching done?

Carpet ripples or bubbles when it loses the tension it was originally installed with, usually from years of foot traffic, humidity changes, or furniture being dragged across it. It’s especially common with carpet that was originally fitted using a knee kicker alone rather than a proper power stretcher, since a knee kicker can’t achieve the same consistent tension across a whole room. Restretching uses a power stretcher to pull the carpet taut from wall to wall and re-hook it onto the tack strip around the room’s perimeter, removing the ripples without needing any new carpet.

What You Get With Carpet Surgeon Restretching

Power stretcher, not just a knee kicker

A proper power stretcher achieves even tension across the whole room, which is what actually prevents ripples coming back.

Full-room assessment

We check tack strip condition and underlay before stretching, since a fix that ignores either won't hold.

No new carpet needed

Restretching uses your existing carpet, it's a tensioning fix, not a replacement.

Furniture handled carefully

We move and replace furniture as part of the job rather than leaving you to do it.

Trip hazard resolved

Ripples and bubbles are a genuine trip risk, especially for older residents, and this fixes that properly rather than just pressing them flat temporarily.

Guaranteed workmanship

If it ripples again from a fixable install issue within the guarantee period, we'll come back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does rippling carpet mean it needs replacing?
Not usually. Rippling is almost always a tension problem, not a wear problem, and restretching fixes it using the same carpet.
Why did my carpet start rippling years after it was installed?
It’s often a sign the original install used a knee kicker rather than a power stretcher, which can’t hold tension as evenly over time, especially with humidity changes and regular foot traffic.
Is a rippling carpet actually dangerous?
It can be, particularly loose ripples near doorways or walkways, which are a genuine trip hazard. It’s worth fixing sooner rather than living with it.
How long does carpet restretching take?
How long does carpet restretching take? Most single rooms are done within a couple of hours, depending on furniture and the size of the space.
