What is carpet relaying, and when is it possible?

Carpet relaying is refitting carpet that’s already been lifted, whether that’s for floor sanding underneath, a subfloor or plumbing repair, or moving a rug-sized offcut into a new room, rather than installing brand new carpet. It’s possible in most cases where the existing carpet and underlay are still in reasonable condition, since the carpet itself isn’t being replaced, just re-stretched and re-fitted using the same techniques as a new install. Underlay that’s old, compressed or damaged during the lift is usually replaced at this point, since relaying carpet onto worn-out underlay undermines the result.

Can carpet that's been lifted for floor sanding go back down again?

In most cases, yes, provided it wasn’t damaged during the lift and is still in reasonable condition. It’s re-stretched and refitted using the same process as a new install.

Do I need new underlay if I'm relaying my existing carpet?

Often, yes. Underlay tends to be the weaker link, since it compresses over time and can be damaged during the lift. We’ll tell you honestly if the old underlay is worth reusing.

Is relaying cheaper than buying new carpet?

Usually, yes, since you’re not paying for new carpet, only the labour and any underlay replacement. It only makes sense where the existing carpet is genuinely still in good condition.

Can carpet be relaid into a different room or a smaller space?

Yes, within reason. It can be trimmed and refitted to a new space, though a significantly different room shape or size may mean some wastage or an uneven pattern match.

How much does carpet relaying cost?

It depends on the area size, whether new underlay is needed, and the condition of the existing carpet, so we quote after an assessment.
