What causes a squeaky floor, and can it be fixed without lifting the carpet?

A squeaky floor is almost always timber rubbing against timber, or against a loose nail, as floorboards flex under weight. It’s common in Auckland’s older villas and bungalows, where timber subfloors have dried out and shrunk slightly over the decades. In most cases we can fix it through the carpet using specialised break-away screws that pull the loose board back down onto the joist without ever needing to lift or damage the carpet on top.

What You Get With Carpet Surgeon Squeaky Floor Repairs

Squeak location

We walk the floor and use pressure testing to find exactly which board or joist is moving, not just the general area.

Through-carpet repair

Purpose-built screws with a snap-off head pull the board tight to the joist and then break away below the pile, leaving no visible fixing.

No carpet lifting

In the vast majority of homes, the whole job happens without pulling back a single strip of carpet.

Joist and subfloor check

While we're under there, we flag anything else worth knowing, like a joist that's sagging or timber showing damp damage.

One-visit fix

Most squeaks are sorted in a single visit, not a multi-day job.

Honest scope

If a floor needs more than a fastening fix, like structural joist work, we'll say so and point you to the right trade rather than overselling a carpet-based fix.

The process

From squeaky to solid, step by step

1

Call & book in

Tell us where the squeak is and roughly when it started, we'll get a technician out.

2

Locate

We walk the affected area and pinpoint the exact board and joist causing the noise.

3

Test

Weight and pressure testing confirms the fix point before anything is fastened.

4

Fasten

Break-away screws pull the board down tight to the joist through the existing carpet.

5

Recheck

We test the fix under load to make sure the squeak is actually gone, not just quieter.

6

Report

We let you know what we found and whether anything else needs attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to lift my carpet to fix a squeaky floor?
Usually not. Most squeaks are fixed through the carpet using specialised screws that pull the board down and snap off below the pile, so there’s no visible repair and no need to relay anything.
Are squeaky floors a sign of a structural problem?

Not usually. Most are simple timber movement or a loose fixing, which is cosmetic and noisy rather than dangerous. In older villas with sagging joists or damp damage, it can point to something bigger, and we’ll flag that honestly if we see it.

Will the repair be visible in my carpet?
No. The screws we use snap off cleanly below the surface of the pile, so there’s no visible mark or patch once the job is done.
How long does a squeaky floor repair take?
Most single-squeak jobs are done within an hour or so on-site, since it’s a targeted fastening job rather than a full floor overhaul.
How much does squeaky floor repair cost?

It depends on how many spots need fixing and how accessible the subfloor is, so we quote after a quick chat or a look at the area.

Where we work

Squeaky floor repairs across the Auckland region

Old villas in the central suburbs are our most common call-out for this one, though timber floors move and dry out in newer builds too. We cover the wider Auckland region and carry the fastening kit needed to fix most squeaks in a single visit.

Living with a squeak that drives you mad every time someone walks past?

It’s a quick fix in most homes. Call us and we’ll talk you through it before booking a technician.
